ROUTE NEWS
*EasyJet will not operate from Gatwick to Newquay from Easter due to lack of demand. It has applied to operate a service from Guernsey, with Gatwick seeming the most likely destination.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
September was a very poor month for Gatwick’s long-haul aspirations. Korean Air announced that it will not resume its service from Seoul due to increased competition on the route from BA out of LHR, while Air China is to suspend its Beijing service, until next summer at least. The final blow was the announcement by Philippine A/L that it had succeeded in obtaining slots at LHR for its proposed restart from Manila.
First visits were disappointingly well down on the same month last year, with 41 compared to 58 in 2012. At the end of 3Q13 the year had provided us with exactly 500 first visits (548 by the end of 3Q12). The September figure broke down to 27 airliners, 10 biz jets, 3 helicopters & a single twin.
Among the airliners, our scheduled carriers sent us a Monarch A321, an Air China A330 plus one each from Air Europa & THY, while Virgin Atlantic used the only two A346s of theirs that we hadn’t seen before on flights involving NFL teams. Other newcomers from scheduled carriers included the final two Ryanair B738s that had failed to visit before, the latest Norwegian B738, the first Iraqi A/W B738, a “new” Icelandair B752, the newest Emirates B773 & even a British A/W B772 as well as the last Ukraine International E190 needed.
The summer charter outfits gave us a Syphax A319, Small Planet A320, Nouvelair A320, Onur A321 & a Pegasus B738, while one-offs were an AtlasJet A321, Air Explore B734, Air Berlin B738 & Air Nostrum CRJ9 plus diversions by a Panair/TNT B463 & Lufthansa Regional E190. Finally, we also saw a pair of executive airliners in the shape of B727 ZS-PVX & legacy 9H-JPC.
Nothing special among the biz jets, which were all from the UK, Western Europe or the USA & comprised six Citations, two Challengers & a pair of Gulfstreams. The helicopters were all from the UK (two A109s & an AS355), while the twin was a Danish King Air.
