I remember when twin engined/2 flight crew ops started over water, they were restricted to flying no more than I thought 90mins from an airport. So on the ie NYC/LHR sector they would have to take a more northerly route, increasing flying time and burning more fuel. It only lasted a short time until the aircraft/engines proved reliable. It is obviously a real concern with the FAA for the B787 to be as far as possible, safe. If that means it proving itself for a short time then it should happen for everyones sake inc Boeing.
